Cat Meyer Reflects On Goals Triumphs Of Indie Lube Brand Head South

Today, she uses the same skills as the CEO and owner of Head South, a sexual wellness brand that focuses on minimalism through its design, messaging and refillable packaging.

After a decade of working in hair care, Meyer knew her talents were needed elsewhere. One night, she had a dream of lube bottles moving down a conveyor belt, and the rest was history. In 2021, she envisioned Head South Radio, a sexual wellness podcast that built awareness around what is still considered by many to be a taboo subject. After the podcast’s success, it seemed like a natural next step to begin creating her own products.

Meyer knew she was making an impact when someone approached the Head South booth at a trade show, and thanked her for making sexual wellness an everyday conversation.

“They shared that they’d always felt uncomfortable talking about sexual wellness, but after listening to Head South Radio and seeing how we present our products with education and intention, they felt empowered to explore what pleasure meant for them — without shame,” Meyer recalls.

Recently, Meyer also spoke on her very first panel, at NY NOW, one of the longest-running trade shows in the U.S. Gaining a growing platform has enabled her to share her mission: “To redefine what it means to support intimacy in a holistic, authentic and transparent way.”

To achieve this, Meyer has created her own silicone- and water-based lubes and a nourishing oil designed for body massages. Her products are vegan, gluten-free and fragrance-free, delivering pleasure without compromising quality.

Slip Serum, in particular, is a water-based lubricant that cleans up easily and is safe to lick during oral play. It is also latex-friendly and can be used with sex toys by the more adventurous. To help customers truly get a sense of the brand, the Ménage à Trois Bundle includes all three products — Slip Serum, Slide Serum and Oasis Oil — so users can try each one alone or with a partner.

Each product also features bright and bold packaging, as Head South wants its products to stand out.

“It’s colorful, playful and unapologetically inclusive — perfectly reflecting our mission to make conversations around intimacy, connection and pleasure more open, approachable and fun,” says Meyer.

However, the brand has never just been about selling products; it’s also always focused on raising awareness.

“What sets Head South apart is our focus on education and intimacy advocacy,” explains Meyer. “We’re not just here to sell products. We’re building a community and starting real conversations to normalize pleasure and intimacy, through the podcast and with our content. It’s about pushing back against the systems that still try to keep this space hidden.”

Accomplishing this, of course, requires hard work. For Meyer, the best and most rewarding part of running her brand is building relationships, but running Head South requires her to wear many different hats.

“Some days, I’m deep in creative work: crafting social media posts, writing blogs, recording podcast episodes or planning collaborations,” she shares. “Other days, I’m focused on operational and marketing responsibilities: handling logistics, paying bills, responding to emails or strategizing our next move.”

At the same time, she does her best to make sure that her work does not interfere with her personal life.

“I also prioritize my own wellness,” she affirms. “I meditate twice a day, do Pilates and make time for movement — morning walks and hikes are a must.”

Meyer is also a restorative yoga instructor and runs a hypnotherapy practice, where she meets and guides clients one-on-one. Yet while obviously a woman of many talents, her greatest strength is supporting her community. She wants Head South to be an inclusive brand focusing on pleasure, reproductive health and LGBTQ+ rights. She wants to prove that no matter a person’s age or gender, Head South’s products are made with the brand’s customers in mind.

“Another misconception is that these products are ‘extra’ or unnecessary, or only for people of a certain age or sexual orientation, when in fact, pleasure is an essential part of health,” she says. “By creating high-quality, body-safe products and having open, thoughtful conversations through Head South Radio, we’re helping to shift the dialogue. Pleasure is self-care, and everyone deserves access to it.”

Currently, Head South’s focus remains on its three flagship products and its podcast. Since the brand is truly a small business — run by a “small but mighty” team including Meyer, her brother and a few close friends — it’s still working on competing with more established major players.

That hasn’t stopped Meyer, though. Since its launch, Head South has already made its way into major retail stores, including Urban Outfitters, Anthropologie and smaller boutiques like Please in Brooklyn and Awakening in Colorado.

The brand is actively looking to expand, and possibly even attract investors in the near future.

“I’d love to see more of what’s already working,” says Meyer. “More partnerships with aligned retailers, more vibrant conversations on Head South Radio and maybe even more products to support our customers’ growing needs.”

As excited as she is about how far the brand has already come, Meyer is even more eager to discover what the future may hold.

“I’m leaving room for surprises,” she confides. “The serendipitous connections, unexpected opportunities and synchronistic moments that remind me why I started Head South in the first place.”
